Don’t know all the people who are following you
Don’t know all the people who are following you on Google+? Thanks to Circles, and our efforts to help you share the right information with the right people, you know you can share as widely or as focused as you like. But as William Yeats said, “There are no strangers here; Only friends you haven’t yet met.”
As someone who’s been embedded in social networking for years, long before Google+, I can attest that many of my real world relationships started online first. Most of my engagement online is with people who started online first, and I haven’t yet met many of you. So it absolutely makes sense to be smart and share selectively – knowing where your content is going and with whom, but know also that just because someone follows you here doesn’t get them any more access to anything beyond your public shares.
There’s no downside to new people asking to have access to your public shares, even if you don’t know them yet – and you just might be surprised about the relationships you build in the future. The requirement on your end, on any service, and trust me, I’ve tried just about all of them, is knowing what you are sharing and with whom. It’s our job, and those of other products on the web, to make this simple and easy.
